When it comes to car safety, the braking system is far and away the most crucial part of your vehicle. This is why your brakes must always be in excellent condition. For Brake Safety Awareness Month, the Hyundai service center at Keyes Hyundai goes over necessary brake maintenance, along with red flags to look out for.

Servicing Your Brakes

Your Hyundai car's braking system consists of many parts, including rotors, calipers, and pads. Everything must be working just as it should, so you should have your brakes inspected yearly. Over time, components wear down and eventually wear out, letting you be proactive about making replacements.

Signs of Brake Trouble

Even if a technician isn’t telling you something is wrong with your braking system, your car may let you know. Warning signs include, but are not limited to:

High-Pitched Noises

If you step on the brake pedal and hear a whining or squeaking sound, the culprit could be a thinning brake pad. That noise is a built-in warning system telling you you need a new pad.

Grinding Sound

While the squeaking sound isn’t usually a big deal – as long as you get that pad replaced promptly – the same isn’t true with grinding. This could indicate that the pad has worn completely through, and now the caliper and rotor are rubbing against one another, which is extremely dangerous.

Soft or Spongey Pedal

Another sign telling you that brake service is mandatory is if your brake pedal is soft or feels spongy. If you have to practically stand on the pedal to bring the car to a stop, this may be due to a brake fluid leak.
