Starting to think about your summer vacation itinerary? If your plans involve any air travel, make sure that you have your REAL ID handy. If you’re unsure what this is or how to get it, Keyes Hyundai offers this helpful guide with tips and resources to make sense of a complex process.
What is REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 and is intended to bolster security standards for state-issued identification, including driver’s licenses. Effective May 7, 2025, you will need this to fly on any commercial airline.
How Do I Get a REAL ID?
You must visit a local driver’s licensing office like the California DMV to get your REAL ID. You will need documents verifying your:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Proof of address
- Lawful citizenship or residency status
Getting a REAL ID in California requires you to complete the application – which includes a fee – and have your photo taken and thumbprint scanned.
Is a Passport the Same as a REAL ID?
Passports and REAL IDs are not the same thing. If you intend to travel outside of the U.S., you will need to bring along your passport. If you stay within America’s borders, you could use either to fly. You can also use a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License in place of a REAL ID. It should be noted, however, that as of now, only a handful of states issue these, and California isn’t one of them.
