How The ACEEE Assesses Vehicles
Every year, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) assesses every new light-duty vehicle released in the United States. The organization’s GreenerCars list is compiled based on factors encompassing the vehicle’s full lifecycle. Vehicles are scored on their overall impact on the environment, providing a holistic means of comparing gas-powered and hybrid cars to fully electric ones. In addition to examining the emissions from fuel burned, the assessment also looks at:
- Upstream emissions generated by the electricity used by a vehicle
- Emissions produced when mining and processing battery minerals
- Emissions from manufacturing vehicles and their eventual disposal
Many Hyundai Models are GreenerCars
The ACEEE issues three lists annually, with the Greenest list containing the best vehicles of the bunch. This year, there were 12 models on the list, and Hyundai had a quarter of them. The 2024 Hyundai Elantra Blue Hybrid, 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric, and 2024 Hyundai IONIQ 5 made the cut.
