Some Hyundai parts are important even if they’re rarely used. You never know when you’ll need a spare tire, but when you do, you deserve to know it’s ready to serve you. Keyes Hyundai explains a few things you may not have known about this unheralded but essential component.
Types of Hyundai Spare Tires
Not all new cars come with spares. Let's look at your options:
Full-Sized Spare
As the name implies, a full-sized spare is the same as the other tires on your car right now. If one of those were to get a flat, you could put the spare on and drive the same as you would the rest of the time. These should be replaced every five to six years; even if they look fine, the passage of time can degrade the tire and render it unsafe.
Donut Spare
Your other option is a donut spare. These are compact spares that are often found in subcompact models to maximize the vehicle’s storage space. Donuts can’t be used as a permanent replacement, as they are only designed for around 50 miles, so get a full-sized tire as soon as possible and consider replacing the tire on the other side of the axle simultaneously to ensure even handling and wear.
Alternatives to Spares
Some cars have a tire sealant and inflation kit, or you may outfit yours with run-flat tires. Remember that in both cases, the speed and mileage you can go is limited; check the instructions and replace the tires on time. If you’re using a kit, check its expiration date and replace it on schedule so it works correctly if you need it.
