At Keyes Hyundai, we’re always looking beyond the horizon when it comes to major advances in driving technology. Electric vehicles and hybrids are taking a larger share of the market, but another huge innovation comes in the form of the hydrogen-powered Hyundai Nexo.

Currently the only vehicle of its kind, the Hyundai Nexo vehicle's sole rival is the similarly hydrogen-fueled Toyota Mirai. Let’s see how they match up.

A New Way to Fuel

Similar to all-electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) utilize an electric battery to power their motors. However, FCEVs like the 2022 Hyundai Nexo use a fuel cell powered by hydrogen, instead of using energy generated just from a battery.

When it comes to range, the Hyundai Nexo gets up to 380 miles on a full hydrogen tank. This is roughly similar to the range of the Toyota Mirai. The Hyundai Nexo fuel efficiency averages out to around 61 MPGe.

One big incentive (missing from the Toyota Mirai) is this: whoever buys or leases a Hyundai Nexo gets three years’ worth of refueling or $15,000 worth of hydrogen, whichever comes first.

Power Difference

You might expect a sedan like the Toyota Mirai to have a real punch on the accelerator, but it goes from 0 to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds. This is positively sluggish compared to the Hyundai Nexo, which with its 291 lb-ft of torque, goes from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.

All in all, you’ll find that between the more responsive performance and seriously attractive incentives, the Hyundai Nexo comes out on top against the Toyota Mirai.
