Fuel efficiency, sportiness, and reliability probably all come to mind when you think of Hyundai cars. What you probably don’t imagine is somebody driving a Hyundai vehicle on the moon, but it won’t be long before that happens (sort of). The team at our Hyundai dealership near Downtown LA is excited by what will be happening in the not-so-distant future.

One Small Step for Hyundai…

While Hyundai won’t be producing rockets or anything that will help astronauts reach space, they will make a vehicle that could be instrumental in space exploration. Along with partners from the aerospace industry, Hyundai is now developing a lunar rover. Expected to weigh around 155 pounds, this will be solar-powered. It also won’t need a driver, as it will be completely autonomous.

“Moving Beyond Land, Sea, and Air”

Hyundai expects the first test of the lunar rover will be finished in late 2024, with an operational model completed by 2027. Yong Wha Kim, Executive Vice President of Hyundai Motors, says this is part of the company’s lofty goals.

“Hyundai Motor Group has consistently stated its goal is to contribute to expanding human reach and the scope of human mobility experiences,” he said. “The creation of the lunar exploration mobility development model not only reflects this goal, but also shows our ambition to achieve tangible results in the face of significant challenges. With the rover’s development, we are moving beyond land, sea, and air mobility to expand into space mobility.”
