To be a conscientious Hyundai owner, it pays to know how things work in your vehicle. Because oil is such a vital fluid, it’s a good idea to understand the different types to make the right decisions for your car. Before your next Hyundai oil change, here are some things you should know.

Different Types of Oil

There are four main types of oil, but not all of them will be suitable for your vehicle.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is the most common – and generally most affordable – type of oil. It’s ideal for late-model cars with engines that don’t have any special requirements.

Full Synthetic Oil

Some cars require extra lubrication, which is what full synthetic oil offers. In addition to higher viscosity levels, it provides greater oxidation resistance. The only downside to full synthetic oil is the high price tag.

Synthetic Blend Oil

Synthetic blend oil is a combination of conventional and full synthetic oil. This could be the best choice if you’re looking to get better performance from your oil without raising your costs too much.

High Mileage Oil

High mileage oil is designed for cars that have more than 75,000 miles. It has additives that will reduce burn-off and emissions, prevent leaks, and protect seals.

Deciphering Oil Numbers

If you’ve ever looked at a bottle of oil, you may have noticed different numbers and letters, like 10W-40. These refer to its viscosity, which is the movement of the oil. The lower the first number, the less resistance to flow when you cold-start your engine. The lower the second number, the less resistance to flow at average operating temperatures.

Oils with lower viscosity offer more protection when temperatures are colder. Oils with higher viscosity will give you more protection when temperatures are hotter.
