If you drive a lot and are tired of spending so much on gas, upgrading to a hybrid vehicle is an intelligent choice. There are, however, different types of hybrids to consider, and talking to a Hyundai dealer serving DTLA lets you know what to expect with each.

What’s a Hybrid Car?

A hybrid vehicle is powered by the same engine found in a car that runs on gas. However, it also comes with an electric motor and a battery pack. Hybrids utilize regenerative braking, designed to capture the energy saved when braking and send it back to the battery. The engine also helps supply energy to the battery.

There are two types of regular hybrids: mild and full. A mild hybrid, while it does improve fuel economy, is still completely powered by gas. With a full hybrid, you can travel short distances just by using electricity.

What’s a PHEV?

A PHEV is a plug-in hybrid. While the powertrain is very similar to that of a regular hybrid, the key difference is that you can plug it in to charge up the battery with a PHEV. They also have larger battery packs, enabling them to travel longer distances solely on electricity.

Which Hybrid is Better?

There’s no single answer to this question, as both offer tremendous fuel economy compared to gas-powered vehicles. A regular hybrid is probably best if you don’t want to worry about charging your battery. However, a PHEV is a good choice if you want some of the advantages of an EV minus the range anxiety.
